For many of us, the most meaningful connections don’t come from crowded rooms or long conversations, they come from the soft paw of a cat, the eager tail wag of a dog, or the quiet presence of a loyal companion who never judges and never leaves. Pets give us something rare and deeply grounding: unconditional love. It’s no surprise, then, that many families ask are pets allowed in assisted living facilities?
On our campus, these bonds are everywhere. Whether it’s Fredi’s cat Shadow, who follows her like a gentle guardian; Muffin, the pampered rescue dog who struts alongside Gail with queenly confidence; or Effie, Rick’s shy pup who knows every treat stop by heart—these animals are more than pets. They are family. They are lifelines. They are home. That’s why Frank Residences is proud to be a community where pets are welcome.
In a world that often moves too quickly, through moments of transition, solitude, or even grief, the steady companionship of a pet is a reminder of what endures. Their love is quiet, but it speaks volumes.

Take Shadow, for example. With her white-and-gray coat that seems to live up to her name, Shadow has been part of Fredi Aks’ life for more than a decade. Like many of our residents, Fredi grew up surrounded by animals, though caring for larger pets became harder as the years went by. Shadow was the perfect answer—independent, affectionate on her own terms, and always near.

Since Fredi’s husband passed away, Shadow has kept a unique ritual of loyalty for the past 10 years: she refuses to sit in Fredi’s lap, preferring to honor the memory of her late husband, whose lap she never left. Instead, Shadow sits beside Fredi, perched on a pillow or stretched out on the bed, always close enough to be felt. Shadow even has her own little room for when she needs space. And when Fredi leaves the apartment, Shadow waits faithfully by the door, keeping vigil until her person returns.
Fredi and Shadow’s story reminds us that love doesn’t need words. Whether it walks on two feet or pads softly on four, love stays by our side, making life gentler and more whole.
